edenPOWER Solar Hot Water powered by Apricus………. What it looks like on the roof and how it works

Apricus solar collectors can be installed in many different configurations depending on your requirements, and type of house. The structure of the collector can be seen below. Normally the evacuated tubes are 1.8m long, and come in 10, 20, 22 or 30 tube sizes.

Apricus Collector

solar_collector

The Apricus evacuated tube technology is a highly efficient, reliable solution suitable for the diverse conditions of the Australian climate.

Manufactured in line with ISO9001:2000 quality management requirements, and meeting SRCC, AS2712, and, Solarkeymark requirements.  Apricus collectors are a quality choice for your home or commercial application.

Excellent Cold Weather Performance

apricus-collector-01

Apricus collectors can perform well even in freezing conditions thanks to thick glass wool insulation and the vacuum insulated evacuated tubes. This is in contrast to flat plate collectors that perform poorly in cold conditions.

Passive Sun Tracking

apricus-collector-02

Apricus collectors are designed with a round absorber surface that can passively track the sun throughout the day. This means more stable heat output throughout the day, not just at midday. The tubes are also spaced close together to minimise light loss between the tubes, and eliminate the need for a reflective panel.

Freeze Protected Heat Pipes

apricus-collector-03

Apricus heat pipes are designed to withstand freezing without damage, which means that the collector can operate in very cold regions.

All Stainless Steel Mounting Frames

apricus-collector-04

Stainless steel provides strength and corrosion resistance, and is used for all Apricus collector frame components.

Special Sprung Heat Pipe Design

apricus-collector-05

Apricus has developed a special spring assembly design to ensure heat pipes are kept firmly in contact with the header pipe within the manifold. Tighter contact means faster heat transfer which is key for high collector efficiency.

How the Apricus Solar Collector Works

The operation of the Apricus solar collector is very simple.

apricus-solar-collector-works

Step 1. Solar Absorption

Solar radiation is absorbed by the evacuated tubes and converted into heat.

Step 2. Solar Heat Transfer

Heat pipes conduct the heat from within the solar tube up to the header

Step 3. Solar Energy Storage

Water is circulated through the header via intermittent pump cycling. Each time the water circulates through the header the temperatures is raised by a small amount. Throughout the day, the water in the storage tank is gradually heated. The temperature the water in the tank will reach will depend upon the amount of solar radiation, the size of the tank and the hot water usage throughout the day.

Evacuated Tubes

Apricus solar collectors use twin-glass evacuated tubes. They are comprised of two glass tubes, fused together at the top and bottom. The space between the two tubes is evacuated to form a vacuum. The structure is therefore very similar to a Thermos® flask you may use to keep water hot. The outer layer of the inner tubes is coated with a special selective layer which absorbs sunlight very efficiently. The vacuum layer insulates very well against heat loss providing excellent performance even in cold weather.

evacuated-tubes

To learn more about the different types of solar collectors and evacuated tubes, please .

Apricus solar collectors have from 10 to 30 evacuated tubes, with each tube 1.8m / 70″ long and 58mm / 2.3″ in diameter. Each tube contains a long heat transfer fin and a heat pipe. The fin acts to hold the heat pipe in place against the inner wall of the tube, and also provides additional heat transfer.

Heat Pipes

Heat pipes are commonly used in many industries, in particular in computers, working to transfer the heat from the CPU away to the heat dissipator past which the fan blows air. Heat pipes are also used in many industries to move heat from one point to another.

Apricus has specially designed a heat pipe for use with evacuated tubes. The operating temperature range from freezing to more than 200 ºC / 395 ºF means that many common heat pipes designs are not viable. Apricus heat pipes are designed to be begin working at a low temperature (30 ºC / 86 ºF), are able to transfer heat consistently up to high temperatures and can withstand freezing conditions without damage.

Below is a diagram which shows the basic operation of the heat pipe.

Picture 1

The operation is very simple. The heat pipes is basically a copper pipe that has been evacuated for form a vacuum. The heat pipe contains a small volume of purified water which acts as the “working fluid”. Because the pressure in the heat pipe is very low, the water boils at only 30ºC / 86ºF. The resultant steam rushes to the top of the heat pipe where it off-loads heat, after which it condenses back to water and runs back down to repeat the cycle. Using this process, Apricus heat pipes have a heat transfer capacity in excess of 110Watts, with the evacuated tubes in strong sunlight able to provide around 50-60Watts.

Mounting Options

Depending on the roof surface, different attachment methods may be required. Apricus provides a range of accessories which allow installation on almost any surface.

mount-options-01

Round Feet

Round feet are the standard option for high angle frame kits when installing on a flat roof, as they provide a strong foundation with large surface area.

mount-options-02

Roof Track

The roof track provides the same mounting format as the standard frame, a C shaped channel, ideal for use on tiled roofs, asphalt shingles or galvanized steel roofing

The roof track can be attached to the roof using a roof attachment straps or rubber pads.

Mounting Accessories

The frame can be attached to almost any roof surface. The following accessories are used depending on the roofing material.

mount-accessories-01

Rubber Foot Cover

If installing using round feet on a asphalt roof, the rubber foot cover is used to prevent the asphalt from melting when the metal foot gets hot in the summer.

For a galvanized steel roof, the rubber cover separates the stainless steel foot from the metal roof, preventing any galvanic reaction or scratching.

mount-accessories-02

Rubber Pads

If installing using the standard frame, or a frame kit using the roof track option, rubber frame pads may be used.

Normal thickness rubber pads are ideal for corrugated roof roofing, as widely used in Australia and New Zealand. The pad is able to mould to the shape of the corrugation, forming a good seal and preventing directly contact between the metals.

Thick rubber pads are used on asphalt roofs to prevent the C channel cutting into the shingles, or melting them in sunny weather when the metal becomes hot.

mount-accessories-03

Roof Attachment Straps

Use roof attachment straps when mounting the collector using the standard frame, or roof track option on a tiled roof.

The straps attached into the underside of the C channel, and then run under the tiles and are secured to the roof’s steel or wooden frame.

Apricus 3 Speed Pumps

Triple Speed Pump

Most solar water heating systems are “active” which means that a circulation pump is required to force water through the solar collector.

The circulation pump is not responsible for developing pressure, it is simply used for circulating the water through the solar collector.   In many cases where the length of piping is more than 5m and especially if the house is 2 or more storeys high, a single speed pump does not have enough “head” pressure.  A 3 speed pump allows the installer to adjust to a suitable speed setting to ensure a fast enough flow-rate is achieved.

Making AIR turbines even better with Highly Accelerated Life Testing (HALT)

Over the years, we’ve learned a few things about building the best wind turbine in the market. AIR has gone through a series of continuous refinements from the AIR 303, AIR 403, AIR-X and AIR Breeze. Each successive model has been more successful – in fact, AIR is still the world’s best-selling machine; with more than 135,000 units sold. Even with this success, there is always room for improvement. As technology advances and we learn about people’s needs, we evolve our products to do more while fulfilling customer expectations.

Today we’re releasing our latest and most reliable generation of AIR turbines: the AIR Breeze Marine, for sailing and off-grid coastal applications, the AIR 40, for off-grid remote homes, industry and telecommunication towers in non-corrosive environments, and the AIR 30, for hobby, RV and educational use.

The latest designs required a great deal of efforts on the part of our engineers as well as independent laboratories which helped us pinpoint weak spots in our products. Specifically, the most common causes of failures were excessive heat build-up during extreme wind events and mechanical stresses on the circuit board.

What did we do?

Southwest Windpower is probably the only small wind company with its own wind tunnel. Our engineers gathered information from warranty claims and in-house and external product analysis. We then duplicated identified problems in our wind tunnel and then began the process of changing the design. Specifically we:
1.Performed a comprehensive characterization of the AIR 30 blades to determine the optimal tip and root angle to capture the wind and made changes to the mold.
2. Optimized the software on all AIR products to enhance performance, reliability and reduce excess heat build-up in high wind speeds
3. Upgraded the circuit board using higher temperature rated components to further reduce susceptibility to extreme temperatures
4. Integrated changes to the circuit board configuration to reduce mechanical stress on the board and mitigate component failures

How do we know we did it right?

After completing improvements, we contracted an independent laboratory to perform a Highly Accelerated Life Testing (HALT). HALT uncovers issues in product design, component selection and/or manufacturing that we couldn’t otherwise find without running units in various field environments for an extended period of time. The HALT subjects the turbine to all kinds of stresses and weather and temperature fluctuations in quick succession.

AIR has been around for nearly 15 years and each year we discover new ways the product is used. AIR is found everywhere from a monitoring site in Antarctica to a village clinic in Sri Lanka. It’s the best because it is easy to install and operate. We at Southwest Windpower remain committed to making a difference with wind energy.

SWWP – Air X

Microprocessor-Based Technology

The AIR is by far the world’s number one selling small wind turbine. In late 2001 we introduced an entirely new level of technology which previously was only found in today’s state-of-the-art mega-watt-class wind turbines.

The Air X incorporates a new microprocessor-based technology that results in increased performance, improved battery charging capability, greater reliability and the reduction of “flutter” noise from the machine.

The controller allows for peak-power tracking of the wind by optimizing the alternator’s output on all points of the cubic curve and efficiently delivers the energy to the battery. The turbine’s smart controller allows it to actually control blade rotation speed thus eliminating the buzzing noise commonly found with most small wind turbines.

Quieter operation

Previous AIR wind modules relied on their aero-elastic blade design for protection in high winds. This caused a loud flutter noise in winds above 35 mph (16 m/s). Air X’s circuit monitors the wind speed and electronically slows the blades as it reaches its rated output preventing it from going into flutter. This results in a much quieter wind turbine. In high winds, the Air X will continue to produce power at a reduced level until the wind decreases, at which point maximum potential output will resume.

Improved Battery Charging

Previous AIR designs required 300-400 amp hour battery banks so the trickle charge of the wind turbine could be adequately absorbed. The Air X’s charge controller periodically stops charging, reads the battery voltage, compares it to the voltage setting and if the battery is charged, it completely shuts off all current going to the battery. This function is performed within a few milliseconds. The closer the battery is to reaching its full state of charge, the more often the Air X’s circuit repeats this action. This means any size battery bank from 25 to 25,000 amp hours or higher can be charged safely. When the battery has reached its charged state, the Air X will slow to an almost complete stop. Only when the battery has dropped below its voltage set point will it startup and resume charging.

Where and How Air X is Used

The Air X is an ideal product for the person that needs a little power for basic appliances such as TV, radio and a few lights.
