Intel releases power management tool for datacenters

Intel releases power management tool for datacenters
Data Center Manager tool kit allows companies to build software to manage or cap server power consumption and reduce energy costs in datacenters

Intel on Thursday announced Data Center Manager, a software tool kit that can reduce the power drawn by servers in datacenters by tapping into hardware resources.

This software development tool kit allows companies to build software to manage or cap power consumption by individual servers or a group of servers, which could reduce energy costs in datacenters, Intel said. The company isn’t providing end-user software, just a tool kit to build it.

The datacenter Manager (DCM) middleware built from the tool kit could dynamically adapt power consumption by servers based on changing workloads and power needs, said Jon Khazam, vice president and general manager at Intel’s manageability and middleware division. DCM can be attached to existing system management software as an console or as a Web service, Khazam said.

Power consumption is provisioned by DCM through communication with Intel’s Intelligent Power Node Manager software tool installed on the chipset of each server. The middleware instructs Node Manager to set power limits for servers based on the level of activity. For example, DCM can cap power consumption on inactive servers while raising the power bar on active servers.

The tool is designed for use on servers running Intel’s Xeon 5500 chips, which include motherboards with the Node Manager software. The software tool kit won’t work effectively with servers based on old Intel chips as they don’t have the necessary thermal management capabilities built in, Khazam said. Nor will the software tool kit work with proprietary power management tools from companies like IBM and Hewlett-Packard.

Though HP offers Xeon 5500 chips in many of its servers, it has included its own power management technology to manage and cap power consumption. HP has included 32 sensors in some servers that can track and dynamically reduce server power consumption. Sensors measure thermal activity of components like fans, and algorithms use the data to adjust operation of the components to cool systems more efficiently.

To use the DCM middleware, users many need to get rid of the old power management tools, Khazam said. Software built using the DCM tool kit can manage up to 1,000 servers, but the number will be expanded in the future.

Intel didn’t reveal pricing for the tool kit, saying it depended on customers and server installations.

Intel officials in February said that power consumption and cooling accounts for up to 23 percent of server deployments, and is one of the biggest areas for companies to cut costs. Intel is taking steps on the software and hardware front to help cut energy costs.

It has introduced new motherboards with voltage regulations that reduce power drawn to 85 watts in idle when running cloud computing applications, compared to 115 watts for standard Nehalem-based boards. A reduction of 30 watts per server could save up to US$8 million in three years in a deployment of 50,000 servers, Intel has said.

The company is also providing software tools like compilers and debuggers to improve performance and analyze software code. Optimizing the code helps execute tasks more quickly and efficiently while using fewer system resources. That could save up $20 million over three years in a 50,000 server deployment, the company has said.

SWWP – Air X

2009 March 30

Microprocessor-Based Technology

The AIR is by far the world’s number one selling small wind turbine. In late 2001 we introduced an entirely new level of technology which previously was only found in today’s state-of-the-art mega-watt-class wind turbines.

The Air X incorporates a new microprocessor-based technology that results in increased performance, improved battery charging capability, greater reliability and the reduction of “flutter” noise from the machine.

The controller allows for peak-power tracking of the wind by optimizing the alternator’s output on all points of the cubic curve and efficiently delivers the energy to the battery. The turbine’s smart controller allows it to actually control blade rotation speed thus eliminating the buzzing noise commonly found with most small wind turbines.

Quieter operation

Previous AIR wind modules relied on their aero-elastic blade design for protection in high winds. This caused a loud flutter noise in winds above 35 mph (16 m/s). Air X’s circuit monitors the wind speed and electronically slows the blades as it reaches its rated output preventing it from going into flutter. This results in a much quieter wind turbine. In high winds, the Air X will continue to produce power at a reduced level until the wind decreases, at which point maximum potential output will resume.

Improved Battery Charging

Previous AIR designs required 300-400 amp hour battery banks so the trickle charge of the wind turbine could be adequately absorbed. The Air X’s charge controller periodically stops charging, reads the battery voltage, compares it to the voltage setting and if the battery is charged, it completely shuts off all current going to the battery. This function is performed within a few milliseconds. The closer the battery is to reaching its full state of charge, the more often the Air X’s circuit repeats this action. This means any size battery bank from 25 to 25,000 amp hours or higher can be charged safely. When the battery has reached its charged state, the Air X will slow to an almost complete stop. Only when the battery has dropped below its voltage set point will it startup and resume charging.

Where and How Air X is Used

The Air X is an ideal product for the person that needs a little power for basic appliances such as TV, radio and a few lights.

SWWP – Whisper 100

2009 March 30

For Medium to High Wind Speeds
Formerly the Whisper H40, the Whisper 100 was upgraded in 2005 with new features and added flexibility for your renewable energy system. Now, any Whisper 100 can have its voltage changed, 12-48V DC, within a few minutes in the field.

The Whisper 100 is designed to operate in a site with medium to high wind speed averages of 12 mph (5.4 m/s) and greater. The 100 provides 100+ kWh per month, 3.4 kWh per day, in a 12 mph average wind. Worried about sound? The Whisper 100 is one of the quietest wind turbines ever tested by the National Renewable Energy Labs. Sound Report.

In addition to its patented smooth acting side furling design, the Whisper 100 has a number of new features that make it ideal for any new or existing photovoltaic system.

A new four bearing spindle for a smoother operation and longer life
An upgraded Yaw shaft that more efficiently delivers current to your batteries
New bronze bushing and larger diameter furling pin for smoother furling action
New castings that allow easy access to the stator for changing voltage Included with every whisper is our new Whisper Controller.
Whisper Controller
Unlike many other small wind systems, the Whisper 100 ships with a controller that includes a diversion load to ensure quiet safe operation of your wind turbine when the batteries are charged.

It installs in minutes and it protects both your wind turbine and battery. The Whisper Controller fits easily inside your battery room. Add the optional LCD display and you will instantly receive real time data on the performance of your Whisper 100.

The display can be mounted on the controller or up to 1000 feet (300 meters) away letting you know what is happening. You can even add an anemometer to your controller and now you can measure wind speed and compare it to the output to make sure you are getting the most from your Whisper 100.

Wind as easy to use as photovoltaics
The Whisper 100 is designed for even the novice. This turbine installs in just a few hours with no welding, no concrete or cranes. Our engineers designed the work out of installing wind turbines.

Solar and wind work together
Solar and wind resources often compliment each other. Generally when it is sunny it is calm and when it is cloudy it is windy. This complimentary effect is even greater during seasonal changes. During the winter and spring when the sun is at its least exposure, the wind is at it highest. A Whisper 100 during these periods is essential to keep your batteries charged and your lights on.

Maximum output in any wind
Exclusive to the Whisper, the side-furling Angle-Governor protects the turbine in high winds by turning the alternator and blades out of the wind, reducing turbine exposure. Unlike other wind turbines that lose as much as 80% of their output when furled, the Angle-Governor allows the Whisper to achieve maximum output in any wind.

RECs/REBATES

2009 March 30
by admin

Householders can contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by installing solar water heaters or small scale renewable energy generators. Where these systems qualify under the Renewable Energy (Electricity) Act 2000, the system’s owner can benefit financially.
To simplify the inclusion of solar water heaters and small generation units under the Mandatory Renewable Energy Target, the number of Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) that can be claimed for eligible systems has been calculated by the Office of the Renewable Energy Regulator and are referred to as deemed amounts. Deemed Renewable Energy Certificates for both solar water heaters and small generation units may be either created and traded by the owner of the system, or assigned to a registered Agent. You may assign your right to create certificates to an Agent in return for some benefit to you, such as a rebate or price reduction. In this case, the Agent will own the certificates

What is the current value for a REC?

Current RECS value is $43.00AU including GST – values are subject to change frequently.
